About Stop3amWakeups

An editorial site focused on adult sleep research, particularly the patterns behind middle of the night wake ups and what current research suggests about them.

What this site is

Stop3amWakeups is an editorial publication that translates adult sleep research into plain language. Our focus is narrow on purpose: the specific patterns sleep researchers have documented in adults who wake up between 2:30 and 4:00 AM, who struggle with sleep maintenance rather than sleep onset, and who have found that standard consumer sleep advice often does not address their experience.

Most consumer sleep content is written for a generic audience and assumes the same approach works for everyone. The actual research suggests something different. Sleep researchers have identified at least four distinct patterns behind middle of the night wake ups, each with different mechanisms and different evidence about what tends to support them.

What we publish

Our central feature is a short quiz that helps adults identify which of the four documented patterns most closely matches their experience, along with research summaries about each pattern. The quiz is intentionally short, intentionally educational, and intentionally not a clinical diagnostic tool.

We also link to third party products, services, and presentations when we believe they align with the research we cover. Some of these links are affiliate links, which means we may receive a commission if a reader makes a purchase. This is disclosed in detail on our Affiliate Disclosure page.

What we do not do

Editorial approach

Our content draws from peer reviewed sleep research, public statements from sleep medicine institutions including the Sleep Foundation and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, and patient experience data from public forums where adults discuss their sleep struggles in their own words.

We aim to translate research into something that adults can actually use, without overstating what the research shows. When evidence is mixed, we say so. When a topic falls outside our focus, we direct readers elsewhere.

A note about credentials. Stop3amWakeups is operated by a small editorial team. We are not a licensed medical practice and do not employ clinicians. Anyone with a serious sleep concern should consult a qualified healthcare provider, ideally one with a specialization in sleep medicine. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine maintains a directory of accredited sleep specialists.
